Movement Hygiene

a compact video course for self study featuring key exercises for the major joints and spine to improve mobility, muscle balance, body awareness and posture

please note that due to a server issue this course is currently not available. We are working on the issue and it should be resolved within the next days!

Most of us take relatively good care of our “outside”. We brush our teeth, take a shower, wash our hands. But what about our inside, or more specifically the function of our main joints that keep us moving on a day to day bases? Just because we can still get up and go to work doesn’t mean that these parts are working optimally. Quite often they just get by covering one compensational pattern with another to somewhat sustain daily needed mobility. But that’s far from health. You wouldn’t say: “well I can sill bite in an apple so why brush them when they are not yet falling out.”

Key points

  • beginner friendly and accessible no mater ones level of experience in movement

  • quick to remember with very little space and time requirement to practice (pretty much when you can stand somewhere you can practice them)

  • can be used in multiple ways and serve as a great foundation to build on if intended

Movement Hygiene is a simple compact way to gently move through the major joints of the body and target the associated muscles and functional chains. The purpose is to re-connect your awareness with the body on a deeper level, and optimize the way how muscles automatically sort of by default move the joints, thus us.

Some exercises are there to primarily create flow, while others are quite specific, helping to re-train the muscles to work most optimally with each other to reduce pressure in the joints, while at the same time supporting optimal alignment.

The course is structured in separate modules building from the simple execution of the exercises to some more in depth perspectives of what we are actually doing here. Understanding helps to tie your consciousness in the process, which is essential for any positive change to occur.

Here is a quick overview of the main sections of the course.

  • Introduction - the concept of movement hygiene, why these exercises and what’s the goal of doing them

  • a quick introduction to the idea of basic principles

  • the exercises > first explained on base level with separate videos to talk about refinement and deeper functions
    - the ankle joints
    - the knee joints
    - the hip joints > details on the principle of “clarity of direction”
    - the lumbar spine > details on the principle of “tension and release”
    - the thoracic and full length of the spine
    - full body spiral

  • how to best train the full sequence and general additional info

The set of these exercises can be used for a number of different scenarios:

  • as daily gently mobility and re-connection routine

  • as a warm up or cool down before or after workouts or sportive activity (several athletes I trained swear by these exercises over regular warm ups or have them incorporated for their extensive benefits)

  • to improve blood and lymph flow throughout the day for better health and increased mental acuity

What sets this program apart from “normal” mobility courses is that we pay significant attention to detail and that your active participation in shaping the exercise for you is essential. We also work with what I refer to in the course as “basic principles”. This means that once you understand (not just mentally but through physical experience) how something works as a fundamental function of the body, your subconscious automatically tries to find ways on how to implement this as often as possible in your life. Aside from that there are several deeper aspects of this particular training, that go far beyond just looking at the body, although that is the major thing we are doing.
